Technically Speaking.
Lately, I’ve been asked quite often how/when the actual filming will take place. I have been certain of a few things: that the film must be shot in HD and that I would have to wait for NAB 2008 to be over before making definite plans about which HD camera to purchase (my current camera is SD).
NAB is well under way, with quite a few exciting announcements from the likes of Sony and Panasonic. After a lot of thoughtful consideration, I have surprised myself with the decision to abandon Panasonic (which I have used for the last 6 years, with no complaints) and to switch to Sony. More precisely, I am lusting after the Sony XDCAM EX 1 system enhanced with the Letus 35 Extreme adaptor and Nikon lenses. For many many reasons – from picture quality to the cost of P2 cards vs. SxS cards, availability of third party manufactures for solid state systems, data transfer times, capacity, long term archiving… So the choice is made.
Actual results speak for themselves – and Philip Bloom is a perfect example of the high quality this combo can achieve:
(a higher quality version of the clip is available from the Letus35 site).
Will be putting my Panasonic DVX 100 up for sale soon…
